The Grijalva name is all but set to return to Congress.
Adelita Grijalva prevailed over a crowded primary field in an Arizona special primary election to replace the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, her father.
The Associated Press called the race at 11:19 p.m. eastern, with Grijalva leading 25-year-old influencer Deja Foxx by almost 20,000 votes with 65 percent of votes counted. Former state Rep. Daniel Hernandez was in third place.
Foxx and Hernandez both painted the 54-year-old Grijalva as a continuation of the status quo. Foxx was backed by Democratic agitator David Hogg, who has pledged to spend millions of dollars to challenge "asleep-at-the-wheel" Democrats.
But despite what some polls showed was a tightening race, Grijalva enjoyed broad establishment support from divergent sectors of the party, including almost all prominent elected officials in Arizona and progressive stalwarts Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
Given the district’s deep-blue lean, it is almost certain Grijalva will prevail against a nominal challenge from Republicans in the Sept. 23 special general election.
